A mindful yoga break for everyday moments
Mindfulness does not require a long practice or a perfectly quiet room. This beginner-friendly 8-minute mindful yoga routine brings together gentle movement, easy breathing and a short pause to notice how you feel. Use it as a general wellness practice at a time that suits you.
Choose a stable surface and a comfortable range of motion. You can practise seated in a chair or on a mat. Keep your breath natural, and pause if you feel pain, dizziness or unusual discomfort.
Your 8-minute mindful yoga routine
1. Seated Grounding (Sukhasana) — 1 minute
Sit with support under you if needed. Notice the contact of your feet or seat with the floor, and observe your breathing without trying to change it.
2. Seated Cat-Cow — 2 minutes
Place your hands on your thighs. Gently round your upper back, then return to a comfortable upright position. Move slowly and pay attention to the sensations that feel comfortable.
3. Seated Side Stretch — 2 minutes
Keep both sit bones supported. Reach one arm up and lean slightly to the opposite side, then switch. Make the movement small and steady; skip it if it does not feel comfortable.
4. Supported Forward Fold — 1 minute
Rest your hands on your thighs and lean forward only a little, keeping the movement easy. You can stay upright if folding forward is not suitable for you.
5. Quiet Rest (Savasana) — 2 minutes
Rest seated or lying down in a position that feels comfortable. Notice sounds around you and the natural rhythm of your breathing. Finish by moving slowly and returning your attention to the room.
How to build a mindful yoga habit
- Pair your practice with a routine you already have, such as a morning break.
- Keep your attention on one simple thing at a time, like your posture or the floor beneath you.
- Use a chair, cushion or folded blanket for support.
- Shorten or skip movements whenever your body asks for a change.
